Creamy Daal Makhani (Maa Ki Daal)

Hello All!!

 Today i tried one of the most loved & famous entrée from North Indian cuisine “Daal Makhani” which came out to be just amazing!! The recipe for this delicious daal is quite simple but time consuming!!

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 1 hour+


1 cup soaked Urad daal (whole)

1/4th cup soaked Kidney Beans

1-2 medium sized onions

3 tomatoes (puree)

2 inch Ginger (cut in Julian)

3 Garlic cloves

4-5 cloves

1 black cardamom

1 tbsp cumin seeds

2-3 green chillies

1/2 tbsp of red chilli powder

1 tbsp of garam masala powder

2-3 spoons of Butter

4 spoons of Cream (can be added more as per taste)

Cilantro (for garnishing)

Salt as per taste


Boil the urad daal & kidney beans in a pressure cooker. Add ginger, cloves, black cardamom (crushed) and some salt in the cooker along with daal & beans.

In a frying pan, add butter and once it melts and becomes hot add cumin seeds, garlic paste and green chillies.

Now, add onions in the pan and fry them till they change their color. Now add the tomato puree to the mixture and fry it until it starts oozing oil.

Once the mixture is well fried add red chilli powder, salt and 1 tbsp of garam masala powder and stir well.

In this mix, now add the boiled daal & kidney beans. Mix them well. Simmer on low heat till the daal is completely soft and well blended. This may take up to 1 hour.

Add water if the daal is too thick.

Serve hot garnished with cream & cilantro.

Tip: Khade garam masale can be avoided as per taste.
